Step by step guide to drawing a comic strip!

STEP 1:
First, start with a story and a rough sketch of the comic strip. Ideas can come from anywhere, such as current news, time of the year like spring and winter, or an upcoming holiday. I sketch out the letterings and characters to make sure the spacing and position are good. At this stage, changes can be easily made.

STEP 2:
I use a 90lb heavyweight acid-free Bristol board paper. Bristol boards are one of the best mediums for cartooning. With a pencil, I draw a 9" x 3.5" rectangle and divide it accordingly. Lines for the letters are added to give it a uniform distance. You may add in an extra line for the top and bottom spacing.

STEP 3:
With a pencil, I letter in the text. I prefer to use a B pencil or softer, so it is easier to erase.

STEP 4:
Next, I draw in the characters.

STEP 5:
Then, I start inking. I use a 0.50mm pigment ink pen because the lines are consistent and dry fairly fast. Another option is a nib pen with India ink. It's a cheaper alternative and takes a little more skill to use, but the trade-offs are richer and darker lines. I ink the borders first, then the letters...

STEP 6:
...and lastly the characters.

STEP 7:
The pencil lines are erased and then scanned onto the computer.

STEP 8:
The final step is to make corrections and paint in the characters with a paint shop program. Notice on the second panel there is too much spacing on the second and third lines? Also, on the last panel, Roy (far left) is missing the ponytail? Both were adjusted with the paint shop program. So, if you make an error, do not worry! It can be fixed! I hope this was helpful!

Step by step guide to drawing Sam & Roy!

STEP 1:
We start with a circle for Sam and an oval shape for Roy. Depending on which direction they are facing, I have placed curved lines to help with where the eyes, nose, and mouth will be placed.

STEP 2:
Next step, I have placed the eyes, nose, and mouth in correspondence with the curved lines. I have also added the ears and the spiky hair.

STEP 3:
Then comes the body, which is about one and a half the height of the head. Both the bodies of Sam and Roy is shaped like a lima or kidney bean. One is thinner than the other but generally the same shape.

STEP 4:
Lastly, we draw in the arms, hands, legs, feet, and tail. The feet and legs are about half the height of the head. I hope this was helpful! Keep on drawing!
